Lot Photo Description Realized
Lot 681
1860 Indian Head Cent. NGC graded Proof 65. Only 1,000 proofs minted. Nicely toned and well struck. A visually appealing Gem Proof with moderate mirrors and exceptional eye appeal. The surfaces are free of any contact marks though there is a faint lint line at the lips. The coin exhibits a beautiful light golden tone. The first year of the series featuring Liberty in a Native American headdress paired with the new reverse featuring a wreath of oak with a sprig of olive and three arrows knotted at the base with a ribbon. The federal shield of the Union is included above the wreath. This design is continued until the end of the series, with minor modifications along the way. Pop 11; 10 finer at NGC (PCGS # 2253) .
Estimated Value $2,200 - 2,300.

Lot 683
1864 Indian Head Cent. Bronze. PCGS graded Proof 66 Red & Brown with/Eagle Eye Photo Cert. A glowing deep-red color is emitted from undisturbed original surfaces on this early Gem. A solidly graded, premium quality 1864 Bronze cent, this coin displays impressive striking definition for an early Proof from the Civil War years. Which is to say that the strike is full, including the key feathers and leaves which sometimes display weak areas. A mere 150+ minted. Pop 14; 1 finer in 67 (PCGS # 2277) .
Estimated Value $3,500 - 3,700.

1864 Indian Head Cent. Bronze. PCGS graded MS-65 Red. The otherwise coppery-orange luster deepens to beautiful fiery colors in several areas Struck with preciseness only now and then found on an Indian cent of the 1864 vintage (often this issue was made from worn dies). Pop 110; 32 finer with 31 in 66, 1 in 67 (PCGS # 2078) .

Lot 685
1864 Indian Head Cent. Bronze, with "L". PCGS graded MS-64 Red S-3. The mint launched a new obverse for the Indian Cent in 1864 that would continue in use through 1886. Snow (1992) estimates that only 5 million coins of this new hub type were produced, an insubstantial total when compared to his estimate of 34 million examples for the 1864 Bronze No L variety. While many 1864-L examples tend to have streaks over one or both sides from improper alloying, the present example is delightfully free of the streaking usually found. Bright coppery-golden surfaces and remarkably clean. The razor sharp strike is noteworthy for this sometimes uncaringly produced type. Pop 46; 38 finer; 35 in 65; 3 in 66 (PCGS # 2081) .
Estimated Value $1,800 - 1,900.

1869 Indian Head Cent. NGC graded MS-65 Red S-3, with/Eagle Eye Photo Cert. Old holder. A copper red specimen glowing with original mint bloom whose fiery surface displays the cartwheel look of a freshly minted coin. That being the case, this date is also difficult to find fully struck. The present 1869 cent retains bold detail to the word LIBERTY as well as the feather ends, ribbon with its diamond pattern, and all leaves on the wreath. Clearly, the coin resulted from a strictly above-average strike. Pop 8; 2 finer in 66. (PCGS # 2095) .
Estimated Value $5,500 - 6,000.

1872 Indian Head Cent. NGC graded MS-64 Red with/Eagle Eye Photo Cert. Fabulous quality and overall surfaces for the conservative MS64 grade. The coin has blazing deep red mint luster and is virtually abrasion-free. A munificent strike, as well as freedom from clash marks or weak areas typical for this 1872 issue where insufficient die pressure occurs all too often. And that is why this is a coin to jump at before it's sale is history. Pop 16; 4 finer in 65. (PCGS # 2104) .

1875 Indian Head Cent. NGC graded Proof 65 Red with/Eagle Eye Photo Cert. A pleasant gem example swooning with warm copper luster. A great deal of discussion also surrounds an Indian cent's strike. This marvelous 1875 has excellent detail with no sign of weakness to the feathers or the wreath and shield, areas where the dies sometimes failed to impart a strong impression, even on the otherwise carefully made Proofs. 700 minted. Pop 7; None finer at NGC. (PCGS # 2313) .
